In this Motus Theater’s TRANSformative Stories performance, Shauna Brooks (she/her) presents her artfully crafted autobiographical monologue “The HRT with HRT.” Shauna tells her story of how as a Black transgender teenage girl without access to gender-affirming care she had to go to the streets to get the hormones and silicone shots that eased her dysphoria and helped her pass as female to survive transphobic violence. Sixteen years later, she is sharing her experience to call for gender-affirming care for all, because the street treatments that protected her from being killed are now poisoning her body. The performance features music from acclaimed violinist Anthony Salvo (he/him). 

Motus Theater and Redline Contemporary Art Center present a special empowering Motus Queer Immigrant Pride performance with monologues from Motus’ TRANSformative Stories and UndocuAmerica projects by LGBTQIA+ immigrant monologists. This performance features monologues by David Breña (he/him), Cristian Solano-Cordova (he/they) and Ruby Lopez (she/her). This special performance is part of a Motus three part series in June, “There is No Them in U.S.” and is presented at Redlines satellite location at the Evan’s school as part of its 2024 annual exhibition Stories_UnderScored.

Women of Resolution weaves the stories of four Colorado women — Ingrid Encalada Latorre, Sandra Lopez, Rosa Sabido, and Araceli Velasquez —  who took sanctuary to prevent the separation of their families through deportation. Guest readers include: Boulder County Sheriff Curtis Johnson and District Attorney Michael Dougherty. Featuring award-winning photos of Joel Dyer and musician Teresita Lozano. 

Motus Theater and Redline Contemporary Art Center present a special Motus performance with UndocuAmerica monologist Victor Galvan and Motus JustUs monologist, Candice Bailey. They share personal monologues about their experiences of multinational private prison corporations & immigrant detention centers, with music from Colorado’s acclaimed acapella group, Spirit of Grace. The performances featuring guest co-readers: Hassan Latif, Founder and Executive Director of Second Chance Center and Mekela Goehring, Executive Director of the Rocky Mountain Immigrant Advocacy Network (RMIAN). Motus Theater’s UndocuAmerica: Reclaiming Our Presence Denver visual art exhibition invites visitors to engage with art that centers undocumented community members’ stories through a wide variety of mediums including photography, illustrations, films, and animations. At a time when people who are undocumented are often demonized as “other” for political gain, the art in this exhibit invites us to look past our differences and find our shared humanity. Regardless of individual beliefs about immigration policy, this project allows visitors to learn more about the impact of these policies on the lives of undocumented families.

Afterward, we will reflect as a community on ways we each have negotiated love, judgment, and systems of harm in our own lives, and then watch as professional improv artists enact OUR stories on the spot. Musician Adolfo Romero will underscore the stories from the audience as we co-create a theater event whose subject is the life experiences of the people attending the show. What’s your story?

Join Motus Theater at Christ the Servant Lutheran Church for a performance of Welcoming the Stranger: Stories from Coloradans on the Frontlines of Immigration Policy.  Motus’ UndocuAmerica project monologists will perform powerful personal stories about their experiences on the front lines of immigration policy. Pastor Stephanie Lord will co-read one of the UndocuAmerica monologues to step into the shoes of an immigrant rights leader who is undocumented. Interwoven between each monologue will be a musical response by Elisa Garcia and CTS musical director Dan Graeber.

In collaboration with the Office of the Attorney General for the District of Columbia, Motus JustUs monologists who were formerly incarcerated share powerful personal stories about the impact of the criminal legal system on their lives and families. Law enforcement, judges and the district attorneys co-read the stories of the JustUs monologists, standing for a moment in the shoes of someone formerly incarcerated. The presentation interweaves monologues with the musical resonances of Colorado’s Spirit of Grace. This unique performative collaboration focuses on the impact on juveniles.

Join the Longmont Museum for a special evening dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the 2013 flood. Motus Playback Improv Theater: “Stories of the Flood” will be our guides as we navigate the tragedy, resilience and occasionally even humor that accompanied the flood through movement, music and storytelling. Come and share a short reflection about your experience of the flood, and then watch professional playback artists enact your story on the spot. Free; reservations recommended.

The Durham District Attorney’s office, the Wilson Center for Science and Justice at Duke Law, and the Religious Coalition for a Nonviolent Durham present a special Motus Theater’s JustUs performance. During this special performance, Durham District Attorney Satana DeBerry, Reverend Dr. Jonathan C. Augustine, and retired NPR broadcaster Frank Stasio model courageous empathy and civic hospitality by co-reading the autobiographical monologues of Motus’ JustUs monologists who were formerly incarcerated. Monologues will be woven with inspiring musical responses by nationally-acclaimed singers, The ReMINDers.
